EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR 2011

CAVEL FRANCIS

FSPID staff members voted Mrs. Cavel Francis as the Employee of the Year for 2011. Mrs. Francis was presented with this award at the FSPID’s Annual Awards Function on Tuesday, December 6, 2011. Reginald Osbourne and Marvin Whyte (Employee of the Year for 2010) were the first runner-up and second runner-up respectively.

Mrs. Francis joined the FSPID staff as an Assistant Food Storage Scientist in June 2001 in the Pesticide Residue and Mycotoxin Unit and was subsequently promoted to Food Storage Scientist in 2004. She acted as the senior officer from February 2010 to November 2011.

1. How was it acting as the senior officer in your unit?
Cavel Francis: Acting as the senior officer in the Pesticide Residue and Mycotoxin Unit for the past twenty-one months was a challenge that I have no regrets embracing. Buttressed by a cadre of competent and caring staff made the challenge surmountable.

2. What would you say was your greatest challenge on the job?
CF: The greatest challenge was to maintain the productivity of the Unit with a reduced staff complement and limited resources.

3. What motivates you from day to day?
CF: There are a few factors which energize my daily routine. First, I'm motivated to perform my duties to the best of my ability because I am deeply cognizant of my obligations to the citizens of Jamaica. Second, is the inherent desire to accomplish the most within the parameters of time, resources and opportunity. Finally, but most importantly, I firmly believe that doing my best at my job is one way of honouring the Creator.

4. How do you feel being voted the FSPID’s Employee of the Year for 2011?
CF: Very surprised, yet humbly proud to be chosen as the FSPID’s Employee of the Year for 2011.

5. Any plans for the future?
CF: I hope to continue to do all I can to ensure that the mandate of the Unit is achieved. Also, as long as there is life I will continue the quest for upward mobility in every sphere.

6. Do you have any words of encouragement to other members of staff?
CF: I'd like all members of staff to always remember the important task with which they have been entrusted and hence continue to work diligently to ensure that food that enters commerce is safe and wholesome.

7. What is your wish for FSPID?
CF: I hope that the FSPID will be afforded the opportunity to continue performing its work and gain greater recognition for this essential work.
